| Customer Reviews: Love the safety, effectiveness, not the greasy-ness July 29, 2010 Elizabeth (United States) We were very happy to find sun screen lotion and anti-bug cream in one. We were using both the badger sunscreen and the bug balm separately, which is quite the hassle if you need to apply them to your child regularly. We bought this because it combines the two and scores a 3 on the safe cosmetic database, out of 10, which is a pretty good score (although not perfect, of course). The 3 comes from the combination of olive oil, zinc oxide, and castor oil, all of which are relatively low risk, but each having slight indications for irritation and the zinc slight safety concerns if used in excess. That said, the zinc concerns are much lower than the risks for regular non-mineral based sun screens which often contain vitamin A, retinyl palmitate which the FDA recently noted that, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions. Yikes. Not good. So we like this pretty well. Of course, one of the down sides to zinc based sun screens are that they are more greasy and look pretty white when applied and seem to stick around even after a few hours (good if you are outside, a hassle for short trips outisde to then have greasy, water proof skin for hours....). But we're willing to live with this to decrease cancer risk and chemical exposure in regular suncreeens. If you or your children are regularly outside and need both sun screen and bug deterrent, this is a great option. It is also nice that it is a cream rather than a stick of balm (as is their bug balm) which is easier to apply than the bug balm stick.
Good Sunblock and Bug repellent for those with acne prone skin July 22, 2010 Snow White In the search for a natural sunblock that will work and actually not cause you to break out, this one seems to finally be a sunblock for those of us who have acne prone skin or skin sensitive to certain chemicals or fillers that they tend to put in other sunscreens. This sunblock will not cause acne! Finally a true anti-acne natural sunblock, at least that is my opinion of it ;)
The ingredients in this sunblock are listed in percentage on the label so you know exactly the percent they use for each of the essential oils that help act as bug repellent. Also as an added benefit some of the essential oils in this sunblock also help with acne prone skin so it is a plus on many levels..not only for bug repellent but for helping to keep acne at bay hooray!
You will of course smell the scent of citronella and lemongrass at first application (keep in mind this is what repels bugs!) and it is not a bad scent really..it will tone down after you have put it on after a little bit and should not be an issue.
Also, this sunblock as with any sunblock with zinc will leave a little bit of a white cast and some oiliness or shine so if that is an issue for you, it is easily remedied by patting on a little bit of your favorite skin color powder after you applied the sunblock and then you are good to go :)
Citronella! June 2, 2010 definitelyfrustrated (CA) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I *really* wish I would have known how strongly scented this sunscreen is! It smells so strongly of citronella that my family won't let me put it on them. (And I don't blame them...I don't want to smell like citronella either.) I'm not sure how well the sunscreen actually works since the smell is too strong for us to stand.
